Thirlmere – The Lake District, a return to my creative home.
As the title suggests, it was an emotional return to the Lake District. I nearly didn’t make it, this was about a week after lockdown had been eased and the plan was to get somewhere remote somewhere without people. I certainly found that! Wonderful indeed and all to myself for the full afternoon until sunset. As the shoot went on I got more and more emotional, to the point I had to head back. This didn’t help, because what I was about to see and experience will stay with me forever.
The walk around the west side of Thirlmere is untouched and natural, the water levels where extremely low. Which was a great opportunity to get right out on the bed of the reservoir, revealing stumps of ancient trees and and huge boulders. Lots of fun investigating and just taking in the amazing views surrounded by mountains. But back to the emotion…
I headed back towards the car and thought I had got some good shots, chatting away on camera to round up my vlog (Sithee!). Back on the main road A591 was surreal, this was when I got the amazing moments I will never forget, not a car not a person, a drive back through the Lakes with no-one around is unheard of! BUT! What happened next was amazing, Thirlmere I had left was like a mill pond flat and calm with Beautiful reflections but then Grassmere was flat! Stunning mirror like reflections, then Rydal water was flat, perfect mirror! Of course I stopped at them all jumping out and taking hand helds of the boat houses and trees on the far bank. There had been no sunset and no blue hour but the light was bruised and soft like a large blanket falling on the trees giving the reflections even more of a unique atmosphere and tranquility.
A moment I will never forget. Hence the name…
Keep it simple – Be emotional – Stay creative
